Obituary for Jesse E. Headley

Jesse E. Headley, age 93, a lifetime resident of Newportville, passed away Saturday, November 3, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Jesse was a proud US Army Veteran of World War II, where he served as an Artillery Forward Observer in Africa, Germany, Italy and France, from 1943 through 1945 and was awarded 5 Bronze Stars. Jesse was a lifetime member of the Joseph A. Schumacher VFW Post #1597. In later years, he was instrumental in creating a Newportville Veterans Memorial, located in front of the Newportville Fire Company. He was a lifetime member of the Newportville Fire Company, where he started washing trucks at the young age of 14. Jesse served in many capacities at the company, including Chief for many years, and simultaneously served as Fire Marshall for Bristol Twp. He subsequently was a member of the Company’s Board of Directors. Jesse was also a life-long member of the Newportville Community Church, where he served as Trustee. He was instrumental in forming the Newportville Historic Association, 2005. Jesse as a young man enjoyed hunting and fishing along the banks of the Neshaminy Creek. He was also a skilled carpenter and craftsman. His creation of an “Uncle Sam” patriotic mail box was so unique it was displayed at Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC. Jesse will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his devotion to his family, his willingness to help friends and his commitment to his community. He was a true inspiration to all. He worked as a Mail Carrier for the US Postal Service for 30 years, retiring in 1982. Jesse was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Jacqueline A. (Lowris). He will be sadly missed by his 3 loving children: James E. Headley (Lisa), John J. Headley (Valerie) and Jacque L. Bennett. He also is survived by eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Mary Headley and his siblings Charles Headley and Anna Dawicki. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing, Wednesday Eve from 6 to 7:30 PM at the Newportville Community Church, 4001 Newportville Road, Newportville, PA 19056, followed by his service at 7:30 PM. Interment will take place on Thursday morning at Approximately 9:30 AM Washington’s Crossing National Cemetery, Washington’s Crossing. Memorials in his memory may be made to either the Newportville Community Church, at the above address or Newportville Fire Company, 2425 New Falls Rd, Levittown, PA 19056.
