I didn’t know Russell well.. And at first fell ill equipped to provide a meaningful condolence. Sure, I knew Russell was a consummate storyteller, a staunch Democrat and a huge tennis fan…. So that certainly spoke highly of his charm, emotional intelligence and sense of good taste. But then I thought about Russell’s legacy and what I had been directly and indirectly witness to over the past four years and most importantly the days prior to his passing.

I witnessed Sara, his loving granddaughter, sit at her Grand-pop’s bedside holding his hand and comforting him through delirious outbursts.

I witnessed Rachel, his dedicated granddaughter, struggle with three young children making the considerable effort to pack up a small household so that her little girl (Estelle) could make sure her Pop-pop was comfortable in the hospital.

I witnessed Billy, his steadfast grandson, knowing the love his Grand-pop had for their dogs, make the sizable effort to bring two very spirited pit bulls into the hospital to say their goodbyes.

I witnessed Leslie, his loving daughter over the past four years go out of her way so that her Dad felt welcomed in her home. This was no small task since Russell’s needs escalated with the years. Nonetheless, her dedication to her father was unfaltering despite the sometimes-overwhelming circumstances.

I also witnessed many family members and friends stop by to celebrate Russell’s life with enchanting stories and affectionate memories. It brought this quotation to the forefront of my mind….

“It doesn’t matter what you do, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that’s like you after you take your hands away." Ray Bradbury

Russell’s legacy was present and continues on in the selfless love of an extraordinary daughter (Leslie), the compassion of his granddaughter (Sara), the dedication of his granddaughter (Rachel), the generosity of his grandson (Billy), the innocent care and concern of his great granddaughter (Estelle) and the consideration of his extended family and friends who demonstrated their love by being present in his life.

…….Russell possessed the unique gift to touch the lives of some exceptional individuals imprinting the best of himself on their hearts.
